Long Teeth and Drinks Brain Soup

Now I'm going to tell about it what they always talk about boys two when they grew up.
áxkUx kuwiteešaáʾA tapAxčiRAhčiíkaʾ hiʾáxtiʾ –
One he was named Drinks Brains, his father –
wehniNAxAhátkA – weh- ninuuwanú.
when he was reared by him – when he was taken care of by him.

And the other, Long Teeth, he was afterbirth.

That is what I used to hear.

And wherever the villages were clustered then a prairie fire came.

Then she came whoever she was a woman

– She was an old woman who set the fire.
– noowi- titiitUhnuuníNIt – weNUtWAhuuNIsAhkoorúhkUt –
– Then she burned the village – when the prairie fire entered the village –

where the village was and it burned every- thing, the poor things, a man,

a woman as one would burn.

Then everything was lost (from the fire) – but, – the poor things,
niikohniiNIštuuwaawáʾAx NAhkukUxkataátA na NAhkukUxoókUt.
whoever they were who fled his running up the hill or his running into the water.

atsú tinaákUx wiítA wituxtaawiíNAt.
But this man he had gone hunting.
witiraa- WIhkaʾiíšAt NAhkuraaWIhkawaawanúʾ.
He went hunting as he went around hunting.
nooteéʾaʾ.
Then he came.
noowi- tawísaʾ niiʾAhnuuxitúhkUx.
Then he returned where the village was.
noowitiraataraniitúʾAt wačéh NAhkUhuúNIt NAhkuraniitaáNA.
Then everything was burned, poor things, its being burned when it became lighted.

nootiRAxweesítIt AhnooxAhtakúʾU.
Then he began to look for her his wife.
wituuxIsčiríkuʾ.
She was pregnant.
anuú wehnaátA na inoowitiihaaweeRAxá.
There when he went, and there she lay partly in the water.
wetehnuxkUxaʾiíšAt.
She must have run to the water (for safety).
noowitIhunáx wačéh wenačíkAt.
Then he found her, the poor thing, as he cried.

noowitištaʾuúkUt kanaaníniʾ.
Then he touched her on the abdomen.
noowititaruupásuʾ kaaWIhíniʾ WIsooWIhíniʾ.
It was moving around inside, in the stomach.
atsú tinaáxA wetAxkoóʾAt.
"But this one now you are dead."

noowitikaNAhkatáRAt na nootikáWAt piiráʾuʾ.
Then he cut open the stomach and then he took it out the baby.
na AxtAhkawíʾuʾ noowitiroóʾa.
And the afterbirth then he took it off.
noowitUtkakUxiriwaápI na noowitIhoohaásAt AxtAhkawíʾuʾ.
Then he wrapped it up and then he threw it into the water the afterbirth.
tsu tinaákUx piiráʾuʾ noowituhniikawaakároʾ.
But this baby then he cleaned it all over.

Then he fixed up the lodge.
akanaanataáʾuʾ witeéka.
An earth lodge the lodge was.

tiwehnaraáhNA wiinásts NAhaáʾU weNAhkukawooruutikú
After he had him the little boy his son, when he would be killing them

Then he said: "Truly he went hunting."

uu wehnareewaawatíRA – kaahaahníniʾ – niiʾAhnačeehaanoótA
Oh, as he looked all around – inside – where the interior was
tišiNUsaakunaakaáWI uu witireeWAtwá.
the (four) main posts, oh, he looked all around.
noowiteehuúkaʾ.
Then he came inside.

na wiináxtš nikuwiteewítat niiʾAhnaawitaátA.
And the boy he was that age what his age was.

noowitiroswá weNAhkuwaawáʾA hiʾáxtiʾ
There was (food) lying around as he ate it his father
NAhkuxtsaasItkatawaawíhA NIšaátuʾ.
after he had put the meat by the fire the ribs.

čituúʾuʾ noowitikaniwaáhAs tinaaríčI wiináxtš.
Everything then he ate it up this boy.

wah wešiNAhkohtakoówa wah haáʾAx wetaáʾ.
Now after they played: "Now your father he is coming."
noowituúNAx.
Then he ran.
noowitiihuunaʾuúkUt.
Then he ran into the water.

noowitawísaʾ hiʾáxtiʾ.
Then he arrived his father.
čituúʾuʾ witaahkaniwaáhAs.
Everything he had apparently eaten it all up.

"Well you must have eaten.
teeNAxkaniwaáhAs.
You must have consumed it."

"Yes, that is what I always do."

wewitiraanaaNIhuúʾU nikukohnuutaánuʾ naaha-
Now it was many times whatever that one was doing the one

– Tell me, why is it – when I leave things for you everything you apparently eat it up?"

noowitiwaákoʾ tinaákUx wiináxtš heeʾ koxtunaaʾít.
Then he said this the boy: "Yes, I will tell you.
wiináxtš tAhuukaahUxuúkuʾ.

When he eats, everything then he eats it up.

then he came running the one the boy.

"You her – Drinks Brains, your fathe – where has he gone?"

"Hey, truly he went hunting."

After he looked all around then he said: "You are lying.

Then he went in the water.

But as they (du) were doing it as he was spying around 'that I catch him,' –
číkuʾ noowitiNAhkuuxaWIsawiráʾU – noowitiiteéRIt.
no matter what he even changed himself into – then he was seen by him.

wah tinaákUx niikooNAsákuuʾU noowitiwaákoʾ koxtuutuuníkUt.
Now this one whatever day it was then he said: "I will catch him.

"Ah, Drinks Brains, where did he go your father?"

"Truly he has gone hunting.
tiraaʾIhwaawanúʾ.
He is going around hunting.
kaakikaakUxuúkuʾ.
He is never at home."

weNAhkureewaawatíRA noowitiroosaWIstuúWA.
While he looked all around then he scrutinized everything.
noowitiwaákoʾ wah tuuxUhuhnaakawáʾAs.
Then he said: "Now let me eat finally!"

wehnawaawáʾA wehnuhnáhkUx wituutaaNIštát.
As he ate, as he sat doing it, he finished doing it.

wešohnaahtakoówa – tapAxčiRAhčiíkaʾ –
While they (du) were playing, – Drinks Brains –
nooWIšitohnuutuuníkUt witištawiRAsxá tapAxčiRAhčiíkaʾ.
when they took hold of each other, he clutched him tightly Drinks Brains.

noowitiwaákoʾ atíʾAx wetatuutaáhUt.
Then he said: "Father, I am holding him."

hiʾáxtiʾ teehuuNIswaátaʾ.
His father he came in sight.
nooWIšitiituuníkUt aáhčes.
Then they (du) grabbed him Long Teeth.
witiitIštAsareewaápI.
His hands were tied.

He struggled with him.

Then he filed his teeth (with) a stone.

Oh, he ground his teeth down.

Then he prepared a sweat lodge a sweat lodge.

He took him inside.
witooNAhkataruuwaawáʾ niikohnuxwaawaaNUxuúkuʾ
He threw everything up whatever it was that he used to eat
NAhkUxaʾaáhNA tsíniʾ iiʾAhnačískUx.

After he threw everything up bugs and their being different things, frogs

Now there was air in it.

Then he tied it to it on the pate.

He made it tight.

Now he released him.

Then he said his father: "Follow him there!

Go on!

This – boy – Drinks Brains then he chased him.

Now he jumped up – there – in the middle of the lake.
ani- náʾU kaaxItčiraánuʾ – weNAhuutUhkaáWI – noowewiteenuuNAhuusáʾ.
That one bladder – the one with air inside – then it brought him up to the surface.
hawá – štoh witutuuʾiítIt wehnuuNAhwanú.
Also – again he submerged while he was trying to do it.
– tsu noowiteewíʾAt aáhčes.
– But then he tired Long Teeth.

"Now let us go!
Axtóh wetaawíʾAt.
Surely you are tired now.
tsu taani- kutseenunuunáka.
But this is our home here."

nooWIšitiwanuuxítIt tinaaríčI wiináxtš šiNAhkohtakoowaakoóčI.
So then they (du) began to go around this boy as they (du) played together.

noowitiwaákoʾ – tinaákUx – wiitakaWAhaánuʾ na šikaakíWA iihéʾ.
Then he said – this – Lucky Man: "Don't go there!
iihéʾ – tiíkUx – sápat.
There – she is – a woman.
tiʾaakawiroswaakarookUxuúkuʾ nataraakunuuwaáWI.
She grabs different ones us going around.
číkuʾ nakuWIskáʾA nooteewíkuxIt.
When she wants then she snatches him up.
nooteewíroʾ niikarúxtš.
Then she makes him into it a sack.

then he said– this– Long Teeth – "Let's go– your father

where he said: 'Don't go!'"

noowitiwaákoʾ – tinaákUx – tapAxčiRAhčiíkaʾ Axtóh tiwaákoʾ na šikaakíWA.
Then he said – this – Drinks Brains: "Surely he said: 'Don't go.'
tsakuunaanipákuʾ.
He does not want us to do it."

nookaneešiWIskáʾA koxteekakáʾUs.
"If you don't want it I will bite you."

noowewituninóʾ aáhčes.
Now he feared him Long Teeth.

tatíʾ áNA nuuxaahčeesíčI.
"I am your brother the one who had long teeth."

na nooWIšitíWA.
And then they (du) went.
nooWIšitikaʾiíšWA niišininaataraʾó.
Then they went into the woods what they talked about.

noowitiwaákoʾ čiraátoʾ čukunanuunáka.
Then he said: "Let's see where her house is."

šohnakawáNA waraákAt withaátAt.
After they (du) went in the woods in the woods there was a trail.
nooWIšiteekawáʾ pítkUx suúnatš pítkUx šohnaawaʾá.
Then they (du) came through the woods two girls, two as they (du) came.

They (du) stopped.

Then he said: "Where did you come from?"

Then she said (one of) these (du) girls: "Over there our grandmother we are all living.
iinawaraačeéʾU nikutatiniinaakáka.
Where the thick woods are that is where our house is.
nikUšitatíhwaʾ.
That is where we came from.
šitsačipiínuʾ nátš.
We are gathering it wood.
nikUšitatihnaánaʾ.
That is what we came after.
šitatihnaanáʾ nátš.
We came after it wood.
wetaNAhwakaaNIštookúxtA tiíNI híNAx.
We are going to sing sacred bundle opening songs tonigh t.
atíkaʾ wetiwakaaNIštookúxtA.
Our grandmother now she is going to sing bundle opening songs.
nuunaákUx kaawitáhtš – nikutIhaakariiwaʾuúxIt – naáNIt.
That youngest one – that one knows the songs – really."

Then he said: "Sing a song!

Let us hear you.

What does she do?"

witiwaákoʾ atíkaʾ wenakuutaánu tákuʾ noo- tIhaakawaanú.
She said: "My grandmother when she performs, she blows into someone's mouth.
nootiʾá niikarúxtš.
Then he becomes a sack.
nikutuu- taanuuxuúkuʾ atíkaʾ.
That is what she does my grandmother."

"Ah.

Now sing a song!"

Then they (du) brought it wood.

She was sitting inside the old woman. She was cooking meat.

hee – šiišuxtoósI nátš.
"Heh, – put it down the wood!
– kooNAhkuuxaWIstiiʾUxšá wenataakuraahnaanookUxtáNIt.
– Try to learn it at least the song that we are going to sing!"

uu waxtóh tiíNI – tsu – wešiiniičíWI.
Oh, why, this time – but – they (du) were now different.

tiraaníNAt tinaákUx wehnunaaʾiiwaawaátI sápat NAhkiisatwirooʾátA.

After she put the moccasins on herself, there were sparks just coming out.
nikuwitsuuxaanuuxuúkuʾ wešohnuutuhčiriikawaáWI.
That is what she used to do as they (du) watched what she did.

And it became dark.
noowitihwakaaNIštookUxítIt wehnaraanoótA.
Then they began to sing bundle songs as they sat.
kanawitiriiʾUxšaánuʾ.
He could not learn.

hee kukaakAhaakariiʾUxšaánuʾ.
"Hey, you don't seem to be able to learn."

noowitiwaákoʾ atíkaʾ witiʾaasihnaakačituúxI kooxikuuriiʾUxšá.
Then he said: "Grandmother, if we were to kiss each other I would be able to learn."

nikunoowituutá tinaákUx.
Then that is what she did this one.

– Then they (du) kissed each other – Long Teeth – and the old woman.

Then he killed her the old woman.

"Now let's put her on the fire!"

Then they (du) put her on the fire.

They (du) burned her.

Then they (du) picked them up – skins – the ones that she wore.

Everything they (du) put the things on the fire.

The heart it hung down.

Then he picked the heart off.

Then he threw it on the fire there.
WIšitiwaawaahíNIt.
They burned everything.

tinaákUx aáhčes weNAhkuuNAxunaásAt noowiti- kuniNAhwiiruutíkuʾ.
This Long Teeth when he stamped his foot then the sparks came out.

"Hey, say!

Look!
čeésúʾ witiišuuxAxkawáNIt.
Yourself put the moccasin on!"

uunaaríčI tapAxčiRAhčiíkaʾ– áxkUx – witeškót.
The other Drinks Brains– one – he put it on his foot.
weNAhkuuNAxunaásAt na noowitikuniNAhwiiruutíkuʾ.
When he stamped his foot and then the sparks came out.

hee atíʾAx wetanuhniwá.
"Hey, my father they'll be good for him."

nooWIšitikaaʾiíšWA.
Then they (du) went home.
nooWIšiteešunána wáRUx.
Then they (du) took the moccasins rabbit.

na atíʾAx wešitatohnánaʾ tinaroósI.
"And, father, we have brought them for you these.
