Hidden Man and the Two Holy Men

Alfred Morsette

wetatunaaʾiitíštA.
Now I am going to tell the story.
tiráʾ huuNAxaánuʾ.– nuu naapakúhtuʾ nuu wehnaRAhwaʾá
It is the way– a name.– Lon g, long ago then when they came
tsu atíkaʾ niinatuuNUxItkáʾU nuuNUxtaaʾiítI.
but my grandmother what I heard from her what she told.
hawá tákuʾ niikóhnoʾ tatuuNUxátkoʾ.
Also someone else I heard him.
hawá nikutuhnaaʾiitUxúʾ wenunaaʾiítI.
Also that is the story what he told.
taatsíš tíʾ Ray Gough.
I think it was Ray Gough.
taatsíš nikutuhnaaʾiitUxúʾ atíkaʾ nuuNUxtaaʾii- tihUxukú
I think that one is the story my grandmother what she used to tell:
huuNAxaánuʾ tinaraáʾU wešiniiNIšáxkA wiináxtš wiináxtš naapaáNU
name this way when they named him a boy Hidden Boy
wešinihnúNAx wiináxtš niiwenaraa- čitáWI wiináxtš
when they found him the boy, his being the cause the boy,

his grandmother their (du) being poor.
na WIšitikaákUx niišohnaanunuunakaáWI akanaanataáʾuʾ
And they (du) lived where their (du) lodge was earth lodge

their (du) living alone.

noowitinoohúnoʾ tiʾAhneetuunoótA čikiitoxtaapóʾ čéstIt
Then they planned it this village: "Let's go somewhere far off

They are not around the buffalo close by.

Far off they must have gone.
wah čikiitoxtaakIhtakuúwoʾ oopií- nuʾ.
Now let's all go as a group a different place!

And back we'll come.
