Who Was Sidney Moulthrop?

Sidney A. Moulthrop (b. 1803-1804 d. 1880) was an artist active in New Haven, Connecticut from the 1830s-1850s and in Washington, D.C. from 1865-1877. Although not much is known about Moulthop's life, some of his other ethnographic work included the making of 29 wax figures of the surviving captives of the schooner Amistad in 1840, which were exhibited in the Peale Museum in New York in the 1840s. According to various New York newspaper advertisements, the figures in the museum exhibit had been executed by Moulthrop from casts or molds taken from the faces of the Africans, whose successful takeover in June 1839 of a slave ship became a celebrated event in the anti-slavery movement. Sidney Moulthrop is also listed as making a model of Dr. Kane, wax models of male “Esquimaux,” a modeling head of Red Fly (Sioux in the delegation of Red Cloud in 1870) and the heads of the Eskimos “Hannah” and “Joe”.
